The joint CCG/IG autumn meeting "By hook or by crook - structural solutions from challenging crystals" was held at GSK site in Stevenage on the 20th November 2019. On this occasion, Dr. Mathilde Reinle-Schmitt presented results collected in the frame of ESS Case Studies program, launched for the joint SPS-XRPD-2/PPXRD-16 conference in May 2019. The talk was entitled 'Beyond the limits of conventional techniques: subtle structural differences influencing solubility unveiled by synchrotron-XRPD' and described how the use of S-XRPD could solve issues in industrial pharmaceutical R&D.
In the ACCELERATE Webinar #7 "The development of Synchrotron-XRPD analytical services to best meet the needs of the pharmaceutical industry", that took place on November 6th, 2019, Dr. Fabia Gozzo, founder of Excelsus Structural Solutions discussed the key role that these tools can play throughout the whole lifecycle of pharmaceuticals, from development to commercial production, including in the field of IP protection.
Among other topics, she presented Excelsus Structural Solutions' business model, developed to make complex Synchrotron-XRPD techniques readily available to the pharmaceutical industry for both "routine" measurements and investigational studies. More information can be found on the following link:

Excelsus'CEO, Dr Fabia Gozzo has been recently interviewed for the newsletter of Dectris. In this article, she answered practical questions about the use of synchrotron radiation for industrial pharmaceutical R&D and highlighted several examples in which synchrotron X-Ray Powder Diffraction was used to solve issues related to drug development. The article can be found on the following link:

The Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network (GWIIN), a non-profit organization, was founded to celebrate this women's creativity and entrepreneurship and to increase their success rate. Every year it awards women for their inventions of all type – science, high- and low-tech, design, arts, education, food.
This year, Dr. Fabia Gozzo, founder of Excelsus Structural Solutions, a spin-off of the PSI, and pioneer of the industrial use of Synchrotron X-Ray Powder Diffraction for the study of pharmaceuticals is among the nominees for the award in the category "Exceptional Creative, Inventive or Innovative Women in Micro-enterprise or New Start-up business".
Dr. Gozzo will present her company at the GWIIN Exhibition on June 27-28 in London.
From May 9 to 12, 2019, the Second Annual Spring Pharmaceutical Synchrotron X-Ray Powder Diffraction (SPS-XRPD-2) Workshop took place at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in Villigen, Switzerland. Jointly organized with the 16th Pharmaceutical Powder X-Ray Diffraction Symposium (PPXRD-16) by the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD), the SPS-XRPD-2 meeting followed a successful first edition last year at Purdue University. Supporting the conference, Excelsus Structural Solutions (Swiss) AG in cooperation with the Swiss Light Source (SLS) Materials Science launched a complementary case study program, allowing the pharmaceutical industry to explore the possibilities offered by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, free of charge.
An interesting reportage broadcast on Ticino's Swiss television on the developments of the five Swiss scientific Parks (Lausanne, Bienne, Basel, Aarau and Zurich) united in a consortium under the Switzerland Innovation Foundation and plans of Ticino to join. Created in 2016, the mission of Switzerland Innovation is to join forces around the common goals of strengthening the connections between academia and industry. PARK INNOVAARE is referred as a successful example of an organization fostering young high-technological spin-off companies and helping them growing up. Interview to Excelsus Structural Solutions.
Dr. Fabia Gozzo, CEO of Excelsus Structural Solutions (ESS), has given a keynote lecture at the 9th Hellenic Crystallographic Association meeting (HECRA) on October 7th, 2018 at the University of Patras in Greece. In her talk 'Harnessing the synchrotron radiation technology to meet the needs of the Pharma industry', she described the challenges faced as well as the solutions brought by ESS team to make accessible advanced Synchrotron X-Ray Powder Diffraction analysis to Pharmaceutical Companies in order to solve issues related to the drug development cycle.
Excelsus Structural Solutions has the pleasure to announce that the next edition of the SPS-XRPD workshop will be held together with the PPXRD-16 symposium in May 2019 in Switzerland!
Congratulations to Pamela Whitfield who was awarded the ICDD (International Centre for Diffraction Data) Fellow award at the 2018 ICDD Spring Meetings. The designation of Fellow is awarded by the ICDD Board of Directors to individuals who have given their time and talents beyond that normally associated with membership.
Nominations are solicited from the ICDD membership. Candidates must have served a minimum term of two years in one of the following positions: Board Director, Technical Regional Co-chair, Committee Chair, Technical Subcommittee Chair, or leader in a noteworthy ICDD activity. The Awards Committee reviews the nominations and recommends Fellow candidates to the ICDD Board of Directors.
The Fellow Award is presented at the ICDD Annual Meeting of Members in March of each year or a suitable meeting. The award consists of a commemorative plaque, and the recipient's travel expenses to the meeting, in accordance with ICDD's Travel Policy.
